FELICIDADES!

A CLIL EXPERIENCE

I really like teaching, I have to confess! It is really rewarding to have a group of students growing as you move along together. The feeling that you are learning as much as they are, that they will all leave a trace on you (as you hope you will give them something) is unique. That was what I felt a couple of weeks ago during a nice activity outdoors.

Three CLIL groups (around 90 kids in total), from different levels, but from our same school went out to experience something like a CLIL shower in a different context. We were several teachers, each with a plan: we all had a game and we devided the students to make heterogenous groups. We had a great time with all of them.
I enjoyed sharing my activity with the kids a lot. We had five different boxes, with different things inside (all representing different touch adjectives). We covered one kids' eyes. They would have to put their hands inside the boxes and describe what was inside to the rest of the students, who, in turn, had to guess what there was in each of the boxes (adapted from an activity my niece told me acouple of months ago). They (and, definetely, I) had great fun. Specially the one putting their hands in the boxes blind eyed.
The last activity was the whole group (90 kids!) together. I wouldn't know the name of the game in English: two groups A and B. Each group had a card with the picture of an object, animal... so that every card was repeated twice, one for each group. One of the teachers described the object (animal...) and the ones who thought had the picture would run to take the cloth and run back to his group. Downright success!
Everything in the activities worked really well (there were some poblems, of course, but nothing the experience of our mates couldn't solve). But what really struck me was the atmosphere among the kids. For some of them it is the third year of CLIL. For others it is the second and the first. But they all felt really comfortable in a context where their teachers (and others who were not their current teachers) interacted with them in English. Some of them would answer in English. Some of them wouldn't, it is true. But none of them felt it was strange.
It was one of those days you feel you are part of something important.

Using blogs and wikis with Ss is, above all, a question posing game. I'm sure you can come up with a couple of them. I think, though, that a good old scavenger hunt could help us see it from different perspectives.

Here is what I suggest:

We would devide the class into two groups. One of the groups would play the role of students and the other one that of teachers. Both of them, together, would have to take a decision regarding wether or not to use blogs in class.

If you belong to the teacher group you would want to have a look at this blog and maybe watch this video (not very good sound for a computer room, but you get text together with it, so...)

If you belong to the students group, maybe this blog entry could help you start having an opinion. This could also be an example of part of a video blog.

Write on one side of a piece of paper the advantages; and the disadvantages on the other side.

E-PEL AND THE ROAD TO PROMOTE LEARNING

I know. It's a long time since my last post. But now I have an excuse. If you visit our blog clilstarters, you will see that I've been pretty productive lately. And that leaves me very little time for reflexion. Pilar Torres wonderful post on the presentation of the brand new Spanish E-PEL, made me think a lot, and I wanted to share my thoughts with you.

The new E-PEL has included loads of the goodies that working online brings about: global access, multitasking, and so on and so forth (I'm not re-doing what Pilar has just narrated first person). I only thought it was too "adult-looking." The ELP's main aims are

This assumes the learner has already evolved into a perfectly autonomous leaner, which is not the case in Secondary Education (let alone Primary). Pilar also mentioned Ducth E-Portfolio as an example of a more teaching-process oriented instance, including a different approach depending on the implied age of the user.

In any case it does help move our methodology into a more learning-oriented process (portfolio=step one; online=step two); one which is more time consuming for teachers. One way to solve this (always trying to give account of Pilar's post) is sharing the load with other teachers. Creating a resource bank, easily accesed from everywhere. In this sense, I've always thought using online learning platform (Moodle and the like) could help a lot. Not only as a meeting place for teachers to share ideas and resources (which is great), but also to set up self-access (I have always liked this term I've seen used in BCouncil centres) facilities our students could use from anywhere. Using SCORM, we could easily recycle already made material. Just a thought.

THE TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have come across this video a couple of times and I thought it could be a good idea to use it as an introduction for a new stage in my professional life.

CLIL: The Debate

I have always thought that CLIL is the answer to many (I had to restrain from saying all) of the problems English teachers have had, specially in the State School System. But it is a quite lonesome decission-taking road. There are many teachers answering those questions all around the globe, so why not sharing? It is a complex field, that of CLIL, but this makes it even more interesting.
There is a nice chance to share our views and learn form more experienced colleagues. Onestopclil and The Guardian are hosting an online debate (this week is knda the official starting point) leading to a debate at the 43rd Annual International IATEFL Conference and Exhibition, Cardiff, UK. Have a look, http://www.onestopclil.com/section.asp?theme=mag&catid=280 I won't miss it.
See ya there.

CLIL Google Calendar

Another bit of sharing and caring. I've just added a google calendar on CLIL activities all over the world (well in fact it was created last year, but I've just added relevant info: better late than never). For the time being it's got information on activities begin held through out Europe under the auspices of the European Union. It's got details of dates (it would have been a nuisance of a calendar without dates), titles, places (some of them with maps, another goody of Google) and even the Code, to make it more useful. It is a public calendar (search for CLIL WORLD). Somebody has already included an activity in Crete. If you happen to know of activities and would like to share info (anything you might consider interesting, even if it is at local level), please do.

2 MUCH.0

I just felt exhausted when I bumped into this page!! It is incredibly important to have tools to co-work with your students. But sometimes it takes longer to filter out what's worth the try and what's not. The possibilities seem almost endless, but time is finite (it should, at least that you spend in front of the screen). We run the risk of sending the time you have to plan your lessons down the drain, just trying to find the right web 2.0. Why not customise our own? Stick to a couple of Open Source gizmos and go 2.0 in your our own right?? A group of people with same needs creating the tools they need for the purpose they share seems to be much easier. One of those aha! moments about web 2.0. Loads of questions to be answered. Still, it is encouraging to hear people already using the model effectively.
Alright, I admit, University students are already "filtered" (lots of things to say about this, but some other moment) and their attitude towards challenges is completely different. Even so, teenagers do feel nearer to ICT than to books. So my hypothesis is that it should be easier to convince them to use this kind of methodology than it has been to make them fill in blanks.

BLOGGING YOUR WAY THROUGH

You know what Blog stands for, don't you? But the point here is, what is it good for in teaching? Specially if we're talking about languages. Well, I can think of a couple of ways (many of you would give me a nice list, longer than mine for sure) I could use it in my lessons. However, my aim is just trying that you can get a glance at how Web2.0 (blog is one of its most famous tools) can help you tidy up all that incredible amount of resources.
There are a lot of places that will host your future blog for free (if you just type free blog in google you'll get all these). I'm using Blogger at the moment, not for any special reason. Maybe simply because it was where I started. From what I can gather, most of the hosting sites gives you more or less the same facilities. A very famous one for Educational purposes is Edublog.
You would have to decide what but also where to post. The inportant thing (as far as I know) is to have a place where you can interact/ cooperate/ collaborate with your learners.
Once you have decided, you have to plan your goals. Depending on what you are trying to get from the blog, you would add certain gadgets or others: from slide shows (with pictures or any other presentation you might think worthwhile) to radio streams, anything goes.
In any case, there are some basic tools you would want to have. Of course, any blog will include postings. And I think this is one of the most powerful resources of meaningful material: authoring your own. Nearly anything you would hand out on paper you could also post it or tell your learners to post it. I have seen it used with pictures of students' work (ART, TECHNOLOGY...), with other mates giving feed back to the author (you could set up on what aspects of the work should mates comment on); a piece of text as a rubric to start a work students have to post after doing research; using podcasts with an activity attached to it (some way), so you could have listening exercises (again authoring is also possible here, though there are sites with free podcasts specific for EFL/ESL); building up a joint story; as a log of a trip the learners make together, mixing pictures with feedback (think about the possibilities for parents as well). Can you think of any other example (something you've seen or something you might come up with now)?
But what's around the posts? I would highly recomend having RSS feeds of the pages you think students could need when doing their research; or of other students' (classes) blogs. There is a huge number of possibilities (click here and you'll see at least 35). Remember that all social bookmarking sites have RSS feeds, that would mean having recomended pages automatically coming to your blog (takes a little bit of planning, and maybe creating your own tags and then promoting, but I would say it is worthwhile).
Something I would also add is a joint calendar (I know about Google calendar, which is the one I use and is embbeded in the right column). It could act as a reminder of important deadlines... If both you and your learners customise it, you'll probably get interesting stuff.
Depending on the resources in your school, you could do it on a regular basis or from time to time. You could set it up for systematic feedback (for students and parents, back and forth) out of school; as a follow up at the end of every unit, you name it.
Is it an extra load, on top of all the planning we have to do? I wouldn't say so. What do you think?

SOCIAL BOOKMARKING: THE FUTURE SIMPLE PERFECT

Web crawling is what we, teachers, do most on the Web. We are always trying to find new ways of surprising our kids, to lure them into taking a step forward. We need material (of any kind) to stir them up. So we spend hours and hours going through the millions of links that come out when we type English teaching in Google (or any other similar smart expression). How about browsing what other users have already found interesting, instead? That substantially cuts down the numbers, don't you think?.
There are certain tools (I'm sure there is a geek-talk word for that) across the Net that help us set up graded lists of special interests, going from frog disecting to needle bending (teaching should be somewhere in the middle of that, shouldn't it?) We can classify and give oppinion on any web page we might stumble upon ;-) You give it a tag/ lable (or several) and say what it is worth and maybe to what extent you would recomend it. If you mulpiply this by the number of teachers who come and participate (there is quite a number at the moment) you get a nice picture of what are the most popular sites.
Let's take a look at some of them. Surprisingly, one of the most intersting I have come accross (or I should better say lead to) is StumbleUpon.
The rational here is "I stumbled upon a nice page about x and this is what I think of it." The more votes the page has the higher in the rank it will be. Yes, you still have to go through things you don't need, but they are less and normally interesting.
You can go about only using web based StumbleUpon, but it is a plus using it with its toolbar installed in your Internet browser (Internet Explorer, or Firefox: I normally use the latter). K-12 education seems the most appropriate tag to look for regarding teaching, though that is not necessarily so. It is a little bit random-like, but I have found incredibly interesting sites using it.
A little bit less random-looking gizmos or gadgets (THAT is geek-talk, though don't know if used properly) are Blinklist and Del.icio.us. They are not the only ones. But they are the ones I normally use (and very powerful for CLIL, specially del.icio.us). They are also more flexible. You create your own tags that turn into proper Web sites with RSS (I'll try to explain both concepts, tags and RSS, later on).
I find Blinklist easier to tag. It also has a Firefox/ IE toolbar. Any page you find interesting you give it a tag (or lable) or several tags, and it will be stored, and anyone looking for information on that tag (say CLIL) will have your suggestions (with comments). If you do this, you help build the community, but you can also just search blinklist for the pages othe people have tagged (you already have a page for clil which is http://www.blinklist.com/ansepema/clil/ or http://www.blinklist.com/tag/clil/, 50 odd pages and growing). You will find that the combination Firefox plus many other Add-ons is incredibly useful. I encourage you to explore.

But, Del.icio.us is much more popular, so the number of interesting pages is larger. That doesn't necessarily mean it will take more time searching, but it will sure raise the odds that you find something interesting. Besides, RSS seems to work better with De.licio.us than with Blinklist (don't really know why), though I find it a little bit more awkward the way to tag the sites.

There are now three concepts I should explain before I go on: RSS, tag, and tag cloud (which has not been mentioned before, but it is a feature I really enjoy). RSS stands for either Rich Site Summary (self explanatory) or Really Simple Sindication (incredibly easy to subscribe). In short, it is a widget (I get mad at all this geek talk but it is the only way of avoiding "thing" or "tool;" they all have a different meaning, but it doesn't really matter, so far, does it?) that helps you keep track of changes in your favourite Web sites. It is very useful with online news papers. Every time a piece of news is posted, it will pop into you RSS reader. That is, you can have a page (your own personal page, iGoogle is very popular) where all updates of your favourite sites will simply materialise. Incredibly helpful for constantly updating resources web sites such us BBC Learning English. It is maybe a little bit hard to grasp, but once you do it once you see it is simply a one-click feature.
A tag is a word that, according to you, could sum up what the page is about. You can use one or more words (normally separated by commas), and every word will be a tag. Everytime you use the same tag, its popularity (so to speak) will grow, and it will give users an scent of what is being talked about in the site. It also helps searches. Just try "CLIL" at Del.icio.us (though you don't have to because you have them all in the right column of this blog, thanks to RSS, but that's another story). A nice feature in blogs and other Web 2.0 sites is the "TAG CLOUD." It is a randomly-placed number of tags that grow in size and change colour as people use them. So, if in a site you see CLIL bigger than the rest of tags, you can rightly guess that CLIL is an issue there. Quite visual. You have one on the right column, at the top. Ain't it nice??

LA LIBERTAD EN EL CÓDIGO ABIERTO

http://www.itais.net/2008/06/19/haciendo-mas-amigos/trackback/

A CONCEPTUAL CHANGE

Let me ask you a question before we go on. Is using ICTs for educational purposes a fancyful way of teaching the same things we were taught... ages ago (were they relevant at all at that time, anyway?). I'm sure you've guessed my oppinion so far. Society has changed in such a way in the last decades that we cannot expect our kids to have the same expectations we used to (or do now) have. We should look at the tools we have for teaching from a completely different angle: it is not only what we teach through, but even what we teach (yes talking about sacred contents here) and, most of all, what students should learn (assessing?).

One of the most disappointing things when you start using Internet is the time you have to spend surfing the Net. Whether you are trying to find what matches exactly your needs or looking for something interesting, as a whole, you might end up spending hours and hours in front of the screen without much success. I'm sure you have seen someone very recently cutting and pasting (analogically speaking, that is) and photocopying for the students simply because they cannot be bothered to spending so much time looking for something appropriate, let alone "author" it. Well, why not let interesting things come to us???
One of the key factors in Web 2.0 (as far as I know) is "COMMUNITY". Most of the tools are based on putting the effort of many people together to make the most of our work. Put simply, two people working together get double the work going (yes, I know that's not always the case, only with proper training, but that's where Web 2.0 comes in): just imagine the whole world. If only we could know what the rest of English teachers considered interesting regarding a specific topic!! GRANTED!
I have become acquainted with Web 2.0 very recently. I'm now very familiar with some of the resources. My purpose is just trying to set up a grasp of the potentiallities of the tools I'm using at the moment, which is probably just the tip of the iceberg.

CUÁLES SON LAS ALTERNATIVAS HOY?

NIGHTMARE IN THE COMPUTER ROOM

Well, after all, teaching at the computer room is not so nice, is it? After a horrible experience where I did everything I'm not supposed to do when you are going to use a computer room to teach, I decided I had to ponder upon under what extrict circumstances I should use a computer room again (if at all!).
1.- first and foremost it should be my computer room, ie I know what problems there are, I know how it is set up...
2.- If it is not my computer room, then I should check:
2.1 if the software I'm going to use (if any) is properly installed.
2.2 if there is sound facilities (loud speakers and/or headphones), or make sure I'm not going to need it.
2.3 how many users per computer I'm going to have and set up activities accordingly: we don't want people getting bored, do we?
2.4 make sure the activities you've set up work in every environment (at least in the environment you are going to use it): you may end up embbeding a video stream that will not be visible in your computer room or it would take ages to load.
2.5 try to adjust you activities to the participants level of ICT competence: if multileveled (which is normally the case) make sure everyone will have fun.
2.6 Internet could jeopardize your success (does it sound serious enough?). Web 2.0 is wonderful but doesn't work without a connection. Is it is an issue in your place as well?

I can think of some more, but, so far, I'm starting to think, is it worth it?? Is a Computer Room a suitable tool for teaching?? No doubt about ICT, but how to implement it? A PC per room? How about cutting down prices and getting, say..., a computer per every two students? Is it reasonable?

ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP, a CLIL activ-ity

Student participation is a key issue in Secondary Education. Not just regarding pedagogical matters, but also all other aspects in the school life. It is not an easy topic to talk about, I know. A lot of factors affect students' passive behaviour (their attitude at school is just a mirror of their attitude outside, for instance; and the attitude of many adults, for that matter). How can we link the EU Comission initiative to involve citizens in the active role of decission taking with school life. Does it apply at all?
From: asergioperez, 2 minutes ago

| View | Upload your own

SlideShare Link

From: asergioperez, 4 minutes ago

| View | Upload your own

SlideShare Link

| View | Upload your own

COUNT CALCULA or teaching through the Web

Where success is achieved, it is usually bound to the methodologies used by teachers across the curriculum" METSMaC 200.

Sami Joik

After going to Rovaniemi, I've felt rally attracted by sami culture, and music. Third day in this fantastic place. We almos got to the core of CLIL this morning (no hands on yet). Big issue today was multi-inteligences and learning styles. Ahí es nada! Really nice ideas been exchanged with mates during debates and revealing input from David and Tuula. "Not a sage on the stage but a guide on the side" could act as a moto of today's session. Then we went out for a "CLIL ORIENTEERING SESSION" with students from University who are studying "coaching" through CLIL methodology. Ousnavaara hill (high enough to be a hill? I don't know, sorry about that) was the place. Incredibly beautiful experience. We went for a relatively long walk throught the forest and both our leaders made our journey even more entertaining translating signs for us and naming the trees and berries we came across (for somebody who barely knows the difference between trees and bushes, that's a heck of a lot). Didn't see bears nor raindeers (not yet), though we did see the berries they left behind, sme-lly-berries, they called them. Didn't dare try them. We got to really nice cottage, where we were welcomed with a warm cinnamon scented beverage. It was not very cold outside but the drink was really comforting. There we met Rudolf. He used to be so elegant in his antler! He was tasty though!

HOW ARE YOU, EUROCLILIANS, DOING

We've had a long day of work. After a nice warm up activity, where we learnt some of our names (not very good at it my self, but successful enough, I think). What is a good training session without a find-someone-who type of activity? Nice and conforting. We dealt with what's happening (and what has happened) in Europe, mainly, regarding CLIL methodology. Vogotsky and Piaget are also around Finland, active folks, aren't they? Team Teaching was also mentioned. I'm not going to go through all the thing (don't panic). Just a quick review. Conclussions: apart from "Finland is an pedagogical paradise," we've seen the whys for using CLIL.
